Has anyone tried it before?
I agree with Mike - don't do it. FoodSaver brand bags are a heavier weight plastic than zip-top bags you find in the grocery store. The heater strip might be harmed if the thin plastic burns into it.
Edit: No, I didn't because the instruction manual said not to.

I have tried the "Seal a Meal" machine and it is just awful. Maybe a very expensive brand might work, but I have just used heavy duty freezer bags. Sounds crazy, but you can close it almost all the way and then suck the remaining air out. Wallah-air tight. I keep a lot in my freezer this way.
Assuming you're in a dry environment when you seal it, and you make a correct seal on the bag, it will absolutely work. You will know within minutes if it didn't seal properly, the bag will start to refill with air as the pressure equalizes. Like the previous answerer, I use them for all sorts of things, in addition to wrapping several hundred pounds of meat each year. They rock.
