What you're seeing on the bag, this "Certified by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association to meet its Nutritional Standards"
Is probably the same thing we in the US have on dog food bags- the AAFCO, "American Association of Feed Control Officials". Every dog food sold in the US….dollar store brands, Old Roy, stuff I wouldn't buy to feed the SQUIRRELS….all says something to the effect of "the crap contained herein meets or exceeds AAFCO nutritional standards" Something like that.
It means basically NOTHING in terms of QUALITY…..it just means the dog food in question has "adequate" nutrition to sustain life. You can feed your dog Super Saver and No Name and whatever "Roadkill Bargain Brand" of dog food, and he'll live off of it. He may smell horrible, have itchy skin, shed like crazy….but he'll live.
The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association is probably just the main authority that did the research & testing and determined what the "minimum" nutritional needs of the dog are. A dog food that has that "certification" just meets "minimum" standards.
Of course, it SOUNDS wonderful to folks who don't know any better "gee- it's vet reccomended! It contains only corn and costs 50 cents a pound! What a bargain!" LOL.
