Potato Vegetable Longer
Potato Vegetable Longer
what's the name of this random vegetable in my veg box?

I have a veg box delivered now and again and this week I have a random mystery vegetable in it and I don't know what to do with it.

There's a bunch of them, the longest is about a foot long and about an inch and a half in diameter, making a tube shape. It's clearly a root vegetable and the skin is black ish. After peeling, its flesh is white and it's a bit sappy.

It's not native to the UK.

Any ideas? Also, if you do know what it is - how would you cook it? My instinct is to par-boil and shallow fry, like a sauteed potato.

Thanks all! x

it could be black salsify, or some variety of carrot.

The potato has become so familiar to everyone today--it is the uncontested star on the menu of chefs both great and small--that we tend to forget its history. The potato has survived wars, famines, political intrigue and is certainly the modern-day success story of the food industry. With its origins in the Andes, the potato was introduced to 16th century Europe by the Spanish and this beautifully illustrated book tell the fascinating story of this nutritious and delicious vegetable before presenting a portrait of 180 different types; from British Queen, first grown in Scotland, to la Ratte, made famous by Joel Robuchon. Then fifty-three potato-loving chefs enable the reader to discover or rediscover the variety of ways the world's most popular tuber can be enjoyed. Feran Adria's recipe in his inimitable original style is for Potato Puree with Vanilla Sugar; Heston Blumenthal reveals the secret of his perfect Chunky Chips; Thomas Keller presents a Spring Vegetable Salad; Jean-Georges Vongerichten--or Vong to his followers--offers a slowly cooked sable fish, potato noodles with creme fraiche, vodka and caviar and Charlie Trotter amazes with his Russian banana fingerling, New York Red Bliss and Desiree potatoes, a kumomoto oyster emulsion and Inranian Osetra caviar.

How the Humble Spud Rescued the Western World The story of how a humble vegetable, once regarded as trash food, had as revolutionary an impact on Western history as the railroad or the auto. Using Ireland, England, France and the U.S. as examples, Larry Zuckerman shows how daily life from the 1770s until WWI would have been unrecognizable—perhaps impossible—without the potato, which functioned as fast food, famine insurance, fuel and labor saver, budget stretcher, and bank loan, as well as delicacy. Drawing on personal diaries, contemporaneous newspaper accounts, and other primary sources, this is popular social history at its liveliest and most illuminating.

From obscure Pre-Columbian beginnings in the Andes Mountains to global popularity today, the story of the potato is one of rags to riches. In Potato, esteemed culinary historian Andrew F. Smith reveals the captivating story of a once lowly vegetable that has changed—and continues to change—the world.   First domesticated by prehistoric people in the Andes, the potato has since been adopted by cultures around the globe. For instance, the potato was aggressively adopted by cooks in India and China, where it has become a dietary staple. In fact, these two countries now stand as the world’s largest potato producers. Nonetheless, despite its popularity, in this era of both fast food and health consciousness, the potato is now suffering negative publicity regarding its low nutritional value. Its health benefits continue to be debated, especially considering that the potato is most often associated with the ubiquitous but high-calorie french fry.   Potato is a captivating read that provides a concisely written but thoroughly researched account of the history, economy, politics, and gastronomy behind this beloved starch—as well as recipes. As loaded with goodies as a well-dressed baked potato, this book is comforting and satisfying.

Making Edible Vegetable Arrangements : Edible Vegetable Arrangement: Shaping Sweet Potato Flowers

How can I get myself to like vegetables and fruits?

Well, long story short, I have always been a picky eater. It's very hard to get me to try new things, and when I do I tend to not like them much. I don't eat any vegetables at all (except potatoes, but those are technically starches), and I hardly eat any fruits and I know I need to eat healthier. Does anyone have any tips that might help me?

well for fruits, you can like put peanutbutter on apples, or buy some of that low-fat fruit dip. but really i think fruits taste sweet enough already. as for veggies, if you stir-fry them and then put some like barbeque sauce or soemthing on them than i think they taste alot better=) good luck
