5 ways to reduce the negative impact of food packaging on the environment?
I m doing a science project, and i need to think of 5 ways to reduce the negative impact of food packagin on the environment. I already have two, use reusable bags at the supermarket, and simply recycling, but i cant think of anything else. HELP?
1. - use cloth re-usable produce bags when buying fruits and vegetables. I've seen them for sale at farmers markets and craft shows made from a washable translucent fabric and has a drawstring, or you could make your own if you sew.
2. I buy my deli meats like ham etc. at the deli counter and they wrap it in paper instead of plastic, Paper bio-degrades much better than plastic and if it is clean, it can be put with the mixed paper recycling
3. Also when you buy meat at the butcher shop, it is wrapped in paper instead of those styrofoam trays and plastic wrap, also keep requesting this at your grocery store. The styrofoam trays cannot be recycled.
4. buying larger quantities helps, for instance a large bag of pasta uses less packaging than 5 small bags of pasta
5. buy from the bulk bins and use your own bags (see #1) For things like nuts, beans, sugar, pasta etc.

Reusable Grocery Bags and Bins
what is the true solution - if any, for the disposable food containers?
plastic bottles, styrofoam cups, carry-out food containers, paper cups and boxes, etc.? We can do without plastic bags and replace them with reusable bag, we can use a stainless steel bottle for the water/beverage, but what are we going to do, or can do, for the containers used widely in the food/restaurant industry?
Fast food restaurants should create a lunch club, where members would get their food in re-usable containers. The key here is that the containers would be tossed in a bin at the restaurant for washing, sterilizing and re-use through a central processing facility. The restaurants can standardize on the sizes and identification, so that non-standard, non-compliant packaging would be removed from circulation.
There would be a fee to join this club, but premiums can be provided like an express line, coupons, or extra large servings, etc. Similar to the old "milk bottle/ soda bottle deposit" concept, the key is to create a trusted re-use process so that the fast food can rely less on the disposable containers when it can.
Alternatively, the discounted refill concept can be extended to foodstuffs as well - bring your own container and pay only for the food, not the packaging.
