I don't do as well going to Wally-World. Honestly, I can do better shopping Krogers. And I will stop at the Save-A-Lot if I'm passing buy. I buy “no salt added” canned foods and I don't often find them at SAL.
I have stopped at the Ammish store in Kanwha City, but found most of their stuff to be … well, touristy. It didn't seem to be a real bulk food store.
I did buy one of those Reynolds Handi-Vacs. So far so good. I have a really old food sealer my mom bought me from QVC many years ago. The seal isn't that strong so I rarely use it anymore.
I like to purchase in bulk as often as possible, not just meats. The Handi-Vac bags aren't supposed to be reused, as in wash it out and refill. But I reuse them on dry foods, such as macaroni, beans, cereals, etc. Meats – well, I'm not finding them to be reuse friendly.
Oh — and thanks for commenting. So few of my posts really get commented on I feel like I'm talking to myself.
#FoodSaver #V2840 #Advanced #Design #Vacuum #Food…
i've been looking into this myself, and even purposely watch those late night infomercials about them.
you can seal meats, fish, and veggies yes. it sucks the air out.
but you cannot seal sauces, like spaghetti for instance.
nor can you seal something like chicken marsala (a dish that has a sauce).
it is just for plain whole things.
they trick you on the tv commercial where the guy seals his flank steak dinner. i hit pauce, rewind and watched carefully in slow motion.
his flnak steak is plain cuts of meat with some plain veggies. there is no bbq or any kind of au jus sauce, or butter on veggies.
the price of the rolls and bags are expensive, even at stores like walmart.
that one thing that pumps the air out of the tupperware thing you can buy in kits AT tores like walmart, sears, etc. those come with a contraption much like a miniture plastic bicycle pump and you manually pull the air out.
with both the food saver and the kit i just mentioned, after a while, the lids just come off. there is this little rubber release valve on the middle of the lid, and after a while it just gives.
now ziplock has that pumping air out/sealer bag out, i think i will try that.
my whole purpose is to make actual individual meals that can be pierced with a knife a few times and easily nuked.
with the food saver that is not possible.
so for right now i am wrapping meats, chicken etc in saran wrap, then using those freezer bags. i don't intend to hang onto these foods for more than 6 months anyways, so it works out.
i will be investigating those new zip lock bags tho.
Do we default on the debt payments or go Zimbabwe style with $100M notes that buy a loaf of bread? It will have to be one of the two. Which is worse? Hard to say. It will be really, really ugly in either case.
Sounds like a good day! I've been a dehydrating fool since you first introduced me to it last year. I ended up getting the Excalibur and have been dehydrating everything I can get my hands on. (Did you see my post about the onions?
This weekend I dehydrated a bunch of frozen vegetables and fruits (take up less room dehydrated than sitting in my freezer!
Thankfully the kids are loving the dried fruit as snacks, which was my initial point in doing all of this. I've even started making dinners from the dehydrated foods. I haven't gotten the Mylar bags, oxygen packs or food sealer yet so I'm just storing in mason jars…but I'm getting there. The sealer is my next purchase!
