I assume you’re looking to set up a lab for the purposes of home chemistry, since if you were setting up a university or corporate lab you’d probably already have connections to sources. If not, I know that my research professor favors for his glassware and and for chemicals; he does, however, have deals with these companies through the university and therefore pays less than the catalog prices. I’m not sure where he gets his non-glass equipment from but I can certainly ask if you’re interested. As for amateur chemistry, is a pretty good source for most glassware; their website is a little poorly designed but their prices are the best I’ve found and they’re perfectly willing to ship to private residences. I’ve always ordered from them and never had any problems. is another source I’ve used before, although their products are a bit pricier, since they have a few components that Expediglass doesn’t carry such as thermometer adapters with teflon plugs. Most of my equipment has been purchased from they sell chemicals and glassware as well, but their chemical prices are steep and their glassware selection is extremely limited. I’ve usually purchased my bossheads and clamps from Expediglass, however, since I’ve found them to be more chemically resistant (be aware that Expediglass lists some clamps as being constructed of stainless steel – only part of the clamp is actually SS, the rest is mild steel or some sort of zinc alloy). I’ve found polyethylene tubing to be an indispensable asset in the lab; it is extremely cheap and highly resistant (for reasonable lengths of time) to concentrated sulfuric acid and chlorine gas among other things, and can be purchased at any hardware store, anywhere. Hardware stores also carry vinyl tubing of the right size to connect to the nipples on a condenser, reinforced tubing that can be connected to a receiving adapter and a vacuum pump, and a selection of rubber stoppers. In the past I’ve used a small $10 pond pump to recirculate condenser water from a small cooler filled with ice and water; that way, during distillation and refluxing there’s no need to continually run tap water. Hotplates and hotplate-stirrers can be purchased on Ebay. Be aware that UnitedNuclear also sells vacuum pumps, although in my experience the “maximum vacuum” rating is nonsense; the pumps don’t come anywhere close to it and generally hover around 5-10 torr. I’m not sure where you could get a better pump. Aprons, lab coats, and glasses can often be purchased at university bookstores. ACE hardware sells black elbow-length neoprene gloves as well as plexiglass face-shields, useful for working with highly energetic compounds. A box fan usually provides sufficient ventilation, but for noxious and corrosive gases I prefer constructing a wash-bottle train from PVC pipes and vinyl hose. Plastic outdoor tables sold by Lowe’s or Home Depot are surprisingly chemically resistant. For chemicals, [Ward’s and both ship to the public. [Antec seems to have a good selection although I’ve never personally used them. Sites that cater to hobbyists are another useful conduit: pyrotechnic suppliers such as and sell a number of indispensable compounds such as sulfur, aluminum powder, various oxidizers, benzoate salts, and solvents such as methylene chloride. Photography suppliers such as sell glacial acetic acid and hydroxylamine. [PRO Chemical & sells a small number of chemicals but on the off-chance they have what you need it’s extremely cheap to buy from them. All these websites ship to the general public and have sold to me in the past (with the exception of Antec). A surprising number of useful chemicals can also be obtained over the counter; ACE hardware sells OTC or can order from their website 31.45% hydrochloric acid as “muriatic acid”, 90-95% sulfuric acid as drain opener (the heaviest jugs, usually wrapped in plastic bags; Rooto is a good brand), elemental sulfur for gardening and sodium hydroxide as drain opener; I have even purchased potassium permanganate from them not so long ago (within the last two years), although I can’t recall the brand name off the top of my head. They sell solvents such as acetone, denatured EtOH, and mineral spirits as well, and methylene chloride can be easily distilled from certain paint strippers without glassware (can provide details if you’re interested). Pinch-a-Penny carries concentrated sodium hypochlorite solutions, 27-35% hydrogen peroxide (“Baquacil” or “Revatop”), sodium bromide as “StopYellow”, useful for HBr and Br*_2_* generation, and Trichloroisocyanuric acid as “Spot-Out”, which has a wide variety of uses.
