Usually get the cheap ones here… $1 a box at the Dollar Tree. But to be honest, I really want to switch to a vacuum sealer. Just don’t want to spend $150 on one and have it be consumer junk. Not ready to spend $400 on a semi-pro one though.
Do you mean bread maker? Other possibilities might be 1. Personal finance software, if tracking spending helps control spending. 2. A vacuum sealer for the kitchen, allowing you to buy food in bulk and freeze. 3. A coffeemaker and travel mug or thermos to let you avoid the “latte effect” of small daily spending. 4. Any sort of tool that lets you do things yourself, which you would otherwise pay for. Examples are a snowblower/snowshovel that lets you cancel a plowing contract, an iron that lets you avoid drycleaning (I know some bachelor friends who always dry clean), or a repair stand that lets you maintain your bicycle more easily.
Kathy, the LDS website is http://www.providentliving.org
Look for “Home Storage” – it has info, links to download the order form – you can fill out the order forms and print them. Take them with you to the cannery, it has it all itemized out, totaled and makes your time more efficient. I'm headed to my local cannery this morning to pick up some bulk items and to make an appt to pick up and use the canner at home. That way I can package other bulk grains etc that the cannery doesn't sell.
Maxine, there are many ways to store depending on your space – buckets are great, but canning jars work well too – just add an oxygen absorber to each jar and it will seal. However, due to possible breakage I like the #10 cans – I buy in bulk, borrow the canner and seal at home.
Also, if you have a vacuum sealer you can seal smaller, “prepacks” which can then be stored flat on shelves or in buckets. You can also “prepack” in the mylar bags which really only require a hot iron to seal. I would still package my foods in regular vacuum bags with oxygen absorber and THEN in the mylar. I find that it is added protection for my food.
If you visit http://www.dehydrate2store.com she has several videos showing how she packages her food in preplanned amounts using these methods. One video is showing how she packaged bulk packages of beans, etc – what it looked like in the big bags and then packaged and stacked on the counter.
For anyone who might think that packaging at home with a sealer or the canner from the cannery is terribly hard – it is NOT. I canned 250 lbs of wheat, sugar, oats, and various beans in less than 1.5 hours at home. I only stopped because I ran out of bulk items and cans – and couldn't buy more that week. Great group project.
Hope this helps.
Kathy, I used to love to visit the Dervaes site but I don't find it user friendly anymore. Didn't know about this. sigh – hogwash on it!
