Food Tumbler
Compost not breaking down.?
I have two combo compost tumblers/compost tea makers. In both, the compost has stopped breaking down. They say the process should take a few weeks. It's been months with two big black blobs in these tumblers. I tried activator.
We had been putting food scraps (all vegetable, some egg shells) in them. Put some shredded paper in last fall. We haven't put anything in through the winter.
Put in some earth. Introducing the microbs that facilitate decomposition. Should be a ratio of one part organic matter, one part earth and one part green matter. Must be turned frequently and kept moist but not wet..

The Linen Workers
Christ's teeth ascended with him into heaven:
Through a cavity in one of his molars
The wind whistles: he is fastened for ever
By his exposed canines to a wintry sky.
I am blinded by the blaze of that smile
And by the memory of my father's false teeth
Brimming in their tumbler: they wore bubbles
And, outside of his body, a deadly grin.
When they massacred the ten linen workers
There fell on the road beside them spectacles,
Wallets, small change, and a set of dentures:
Blood, food particles, the bread, the wine.
Before I can bury my father once again
I must polish the spectacles, balance them
Upon his nose, fill his pockets with money
And into his dead mouth slip the set of teeth.
I don't understand what the first two stanzas mean, can someone explain or give their views please? For the most part, i do understand the rest of his poetry, just not so much this part
The first two stanzas are a bit wierd, and its not obvious what Mr. Michael Longley is getting at... but I'll see what I can make of it.
The clearest thing, I think, is that we're meant to compare Jesus and the man that is killed (who we assume is a linen worker and the speaker's father). When Jesus dies, we're told, his teeth stay in his body and ascend with him. When the father dies, his teeth come out of his body and fall on the road. An obvious contrast. An OPPOSITE outcome. What's that all about? Why?
Well, I guess it stresses that the father's death is unnatural, that it's murder. His teeth aren't meant to come out. And when they're meant to go up, they go down instead. This makes sense when we read the last stanza: before they bury the father (and so before he can "ascend" to heaven) they need to put his teeth back in, and give him back all the other stuff that fell off him when he was violently killed. (The fact that everything fell off him suggests that the murder really was violent - there was so much energy and violent motion that things fell out his pockets and even his teeth came out!) So his teeth shouldn't have come out, and he shouldn't have been murdered. Perhaps it's as simple as "Murder is wrong".
It also makes sense that he's compared to Jesus, as Jesus was also wrongly and violently killed. So while the father is contrasted with Jesus, he is also simultaneously likened to Jesus. BOTH were wrongly killed. By being compared to Jesus, then, the father seems to be elevated to the level of a martyr - perhaps he died for a cause and his death teaches us something? What his death could teach us, I guess, is the same old thing: "murder is wrong - we are all human".
The reason I add "we are all human" is because the poem really emphasises the human side of it all. We are told about all the everyday things. There are no words like "love", "hate", "right", "wrong", "life", "death", blah, blah, blah, in the poem. There are only wallets, small change, teeth. All these things are normal, everyday, small and HUMAN things. Even Jesus, who is normally an amazing, perfect, superhuman, god-like figure who can turn water into wine and all that, even he is just another human being in the poem. He has a hole in one of his teeth. Who tells us that Jesus has a hole in one of his teeth!! Why tell us that?! It's because Jesus was just another human being. Jesus had teeth, and they had holes in them - and don't forget it. This is also, I think, the meaning of the second stanza. He really gives us detail about the teeth - even the bubbles that stuck to it when it was in a glass of water. It's the small things that make up human existence that are important and meaningful, not big empty words like "right" and "wrong". All the things in the poem are described without much feeling - it's like a straightforward description by a police officer or something. This means that it's almost up to the reader to work out what's "right" and "wrong" about what's being described.
But again, the moral seems to "murder is wrong - we are all human... even Jesus!".
I've still no idea why in the first stanza Jesus flies up into the air with his teeth whistling and then seems to bite the sky. Why does Jesus do that? What's the point in telling us that? I've got no ideas. But there you go.
