How much would it cost to run a self-sufficient farm?
I'm looking into moving my family back onto the farm like I grew up, money for monthly and yearly things will not be an issue. But I would like to know a basic number for the cost of equipment, buildings, and product storage, and, if possible, maintenance costs for those. Land prices we have already figured, but I am still open to recommendations for land size for a family of 6 that may expand.
We are all very picky eaters so we don't need a large number of things to sustain our happiness with what we eat. I see, primarily, what we would need in decent quantities is wheat and corn. As well small assortment of vegetables and fruit. None of us eat meat except for some occasional chicken, but not very often (we tend to be disgusted by meat). Milk, cheese, butter, cream, ect. is another thing that we would like to have in quantities and taking care of a few dairy cows for that is not a big deal.
A solar system has been priced and reviewed to include 100% off-grid use.
If it is truly self sufficient it should cost nothing. the income should cover all costs, but I don't think that is what you are talking about.

Vegetable $87.62 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In everyday language, the words fruit and vegetable are mutually exclusive: plant products that are called fruits are hardly ever classified as vegetables, and vice versa. However, for scientists the word fruit also has a precise botanical meaning, which is considerably different from its common meaning. While peaches, plums, and oranges are fruits in both senses, many items commonly called vegetables such as eggplants, bell peppers, and tomatoes are technically fruits, as are also most cereals, as well as some spices like pepper and chillies. Heirloom Fruits and Vegetables (Hardcover) $58.75 Fruits and vegetables have been a central part of our diets since time immemorial, and the history of their cultivation is rich with intriguing facts: Samuel Pepys`s diary entry for August 22, 1663, reveals that ?Mr Newburne is dead of eating Cowcoumbers? (cucumbers); many tomato varieties were first bred in the United States and are still available, from?Striped German? to ?Pink Ping Pong? to ?Zapotec.?Today, numerous traditional fruit and vegetable varieties?the so-called heirloom or heritage varieties?-are disappearing, a catastrophic loss of horticultural heritage and genetic diversity. But gardeners have reason to be optimistic. A group of dedicated growers around the world is seeking to conserve surviving heritage varieties for their significant advantages over newer cultivars: they are more adaptable, they have good storage properties, and they often have a superior taste.Presented by season, this overview first tells the story of the cultivation of fruits and vegetables through the ages, and then each type is discussed: where it originated, indigenous uses and folklore, how it got its name, legends and beliefs that have become attached to it, and the odd uses to which it has been put. |

Food Storage : Fruit & Vegetable Storage
Composting?
I have finally started composting! I am using a plastic storage container with a lid, and am dumping tea, coffee grounds, vegetable, and fruit waste. I also put in either potting soil, or hummus about once a week. ( Just sprinkle a layer on top.)
I have been doing this for about 2 months. I just went out to turn it ( I have not turned it in about two weeks), and I noticed these large larvae things in it. I am guessing that they are some kind of fly larvae, but they are larger than any I have seen, being about an inch long and about as big as a pinkie.
I worry that I might not have enough carbon material, but other than that I think that I am doing what I am supposed to do.
I would just like to hear from my fellow composters - hopefully with more experience than I!
--Just want to make sure that I am not creating a health hazard, or breeding some kind of mutant creature.
Does anyone know what these things are? Everything seems to be decomposing okay.
You are doing fine except you are forge ting a big step. You are getting all sorts of things in what you have as all you are doing is creating a garbage dump.
You have a start but you need to add some sort of fertilizer and moisture to create heat that works the compost. This heat also kills the larva.
Nearly anything that once lived is a candidate for your home compost heap. Grass clippings, ground-up leaves, vegetable peelings, egg shells, pine needles, wood ashes, seaweed, hair clippings, coffee grounds and tea bags are all excellent ingredients for your homemade compost. Remember to never put human and pet excretement, any kind of meat products (they attract animals and pests) and diseased plants.
Whatever ingredients you choose to use in your pile remember to have a variety if possible. A more diverse pile is likely to decompose faster and maintain a higher internal temperature. As your compost pile starts to grow, turn it twice a week with a pitchfork and keep it damp but not sopping wet. Turning the pile will aerate it and also move less decomposed matter into the middle of the heap. As organisms start to break down all the layers, you will notice that the center of the pile becomes very hot. This is a sign that your compost is working.
It all depends on how involved you wish to be and how fast you want to start useing your compost. If you want your pile to decay quickly then you must take the time to chop up large fibrous materials and woody stalks and branches. Turn the pile and add carbon rich materials. As well it is a good idea to add a layer of soil over kitchen wastes so as not to attract flies and other animals. You will know that your compost is done when it becomes dark brown or black and resembles commercial potting soil, just lumpier. Keep your finished compost covered so it is not exposed to rain or snow or it will lose many of its nutrients. The outer portions of your pile that have not fully decomposed can be added to the next pile as a starter mix.

Maybe there are talking about some prokaryotic organisms that can photosynthesise and that the green bags stop light entering so these organisms cannot grow; spoiling food of food is caused by the excrements of the organisms. I don't really know but it is something.
