Why isn't there any water coming out of our outside spigot/faucet?
My husband and I just bought a house and are doing some yard work today that requires a hose. When we turn on the outside spigot nothing happens- no water comes out. Do we need to turn something on? The water is on inside of the house. Thanks for your help!
Do you have a frost-proof spigot? If the valve stem comes out at an angle, it's not frost-proof. If it comes straight out, it's more likely frost-proof. If it's not frost-proof, you'll most likely have a shutoff valve somewhere in the house behind the spigot (most likely in a basement or crawlspace). If you find that valve, try turning the valve counter-clockwise. If it turns, that's most likely your problem. If you open the valve and you get water outside, just remember to shut it back off before temperatures get below freezing outside. If you have a frost-proof spigot, there's typically no need for an additional shutoff valve inside the house. If you still have no water, you may have something blocking the spigot. Turn the water off to the house, disassemble the spigot and look for blockage. If you don't see any blockage, turn the water back on to the house briefly to blow any blockage out of the spigot, then turn the water back off. If that took care of your problem, reassemble the spigot and turn the water back on to the house. If you still don't have water, it's probably time to call a plumber.
