Egg Drop lab help please?! Usable materials below?
1 white regular chicken egg – raw NOT boiled
4 bathroom size PAPER Dixie cups OR 3 toilet paper rolls (NO toilet paper on them!) You may NOT use both – may NOT mix cups and paper rolls!
10 regular straws (straight or bendy)
25 wooden toothpicks
1 wire coat hanger
1 plastic coffee LID (no size limit)
1 sheet of 8 ½ x 11 inch paper (NOT cardboard/tagboard)
25 popsicle sticks
10 cotton balls (NO jumbo size)
1 sandwich bag (NOT gallon/quart/snack/etc! Just sandwich size!!)
1 meter of string/yarn
50 cm of masking OR scotch tape no wider than 1 inch (no duct/mailing/wider width/etc. tape)
6 rubber bands
10 paperclips (no size specification)
Glue (elmers, hot glue, super glue)
It's a TWO story drop too.. :'(

You have to do 2 essential things at the same time.
The first issue is create a structure that offers support to the greatest surface area of the bottom half of the egg to prevent any uneven stress cracking the eggshell and the second is to decelerate the egg to rest so the first issue can achieve a successful outcome. There is a problem immediately and that is the height of the drop is an unknown to determine if the deceleration system is adequate for the task.
From an engineering standpoint I can see a 2 part method for deceleration and to keep the structure in the correct orientation and the simplest structure to fabricate to take the stress of the drop would be a triangular pyramid.
OK... take the Dixie cup and put the cotton balls in it. Use tape to secure one end of the rubber bands to the cup. Next get the straws and fabricate the largest triangular pyramid you can with the ends of one vertex passed through the rubber bands. Use plenty of tape to make the structure as strong as possible, even placing taped gussets and popsicle sticks in the corners for added strength. You should end up with a pyramid with the dixie cup and rubber suspension which becomes the top end.
Next take the sheet of paper tape the corners for strength and then punch holes in each corner and use the string provided to form a type of parachute which is then taped to the top vertex of the pyramid.
Place the egg in the cup and importantly hold the structure by the paper parachute so it work immediately you release and lift it up to the height it needs to be and then let go.
You really need to test the device before using it to find weak points in the pyramid when it lands and if the suspension system for the egg is both strong enough and sufficient.
