Aluminum Lunch Insulated
Name some good insulators?
Doing a science project where I have to create a insulating lunch box. So far I have this cool aluminum bubble-wrap (cool eh?) with a R value of 4.
We're not allowed to use expanded polystyrene or fiber glass.
Any ideas?
That sounds like a reasonable insulation if that is true. It seems it is more for radiant heat though, blocking that very well, and may be as low as 2 for your situation. Try it and make the point. Other insulators that are around 3.5 are sheep's wool, felt, shredded cotton, cotton balls, rock wool. I thought ordinary bubble wrap for packaging would be reasonable too, but found it rated about R-2. Several layers of insulation with small air gaps will give good results, think of thin cardboard boxes within boxes to block air flow, with insulation space between. The link below gives some results from a school experiment.
To be effective the whole lunchbox has to be enclosed with a well fitted lid, so there are no air paths or conduction paths.
