Alternative to using plastic bags for freezing?
Is there any alternative to wrapping things in plastic or using plastic bags to freeze bulk items, meats, fresh veggies, etc? I freeze a lot of things and feel very wasteful using all that plastic. Would it be possible to put things in reuseable containers? Or would the extra air space lead to freezerburn? thanks.

I like to use stackable containers in my freezer and they are great space savers. If I can't find the perfect container and have lots of air space in the container; I will take a piece of foil and fold it to fit snugly to whatever I am freezing. Foil is actually quite handy and can be washed and rinsed and reused multiple times. It can be folded and stored easily. It's really not that hard once you get into the habit...
In an effort to reduce styrofoam usage, (styrofoam is just as bad, or worse than plastic) I buy most of my meats from the butchers counter. (that way I can choose my cuts and I have them wrap the meat tightly in the wax paper prior to being wrapped in paper. And I have them wrap my purchases in the proportions that I plan to use.) I keep wax paper at home too, and if I have a fish to freeze I will wrap it tightly in wax paper, cut open a paper grocery bag and wrap it tightly around the fish. (Although It looks horrible, I use duct tape to fasten the bag down as I've found most other tapes don't hold.)
I buy a lot of frozen vegatables. They come packaged in large resealable bags. I stack them tightly and always remove as much air as possible. To reduce my own consumtion of freezer bags, I wash out and keep a few of these on hand for any other uses I might find. ( I keep a few of these in the same drawer with the folded foil.)
I commend you for your efforts to reduce your consumption... I was once a really bad consumer (typical guy) until I learned how plastics and styrofoam were polluting our oceans and filling our landfills.
