Laptop Lunches
What do you think would improve schools most?Would it be an outdoor lunch area, new sports equiptment,Laptops?
I am just curious about what others think would improve the school. Do you think an outdoor lunch area, new sports equiptment, or laptops for students to check out would improve schools? What are three reasons for your answer?
Assuming your listed choices are the only three options, my opinions follow:
1. Outdoor lunch area - unusuable in bad weather, and depends on what part of the country you in which you live. If Green Bay, Wisconsin, not likely you would have lunch outdoors in January, but then...Also, the area might be used mainly at lunch.
2. New sports equipment - this would be my choice for several reasons. Large numbers of our population are out of shape and downright flabby. The equipment would help to improve fitness which would help reduce weight which would help self image. Excercise also reduces anxiety, depression, and sensitivity to stress, to name a few of the benefits. Young folks spend way too much time as couch potatoes or in front of a monitor.
3. Laptops - I have worked with computers for many years and one thing is constant....change. The typical computer is obsolete after 2 years. Laptops tend to be more fragile, overheat easier, and are more costly than desktops. Generally, computers are assembled from more than 1,000 materials many of which add to the toxic waste disposal problem with chlorinated and brominated substances, plus acids and plastics which do not biodegrade.
Thus, in my opinion, if you want the most bang for the buck in improving schools, invest the funds in the new sports equipment. It not only will last longer, but the dividends to the students are immeasurable.

Laptop Lunches: Think Bento
Will shutting down my laptop for lunch help lengthen its lifespan or should it just run the whole day?
Is it better to shut down and let the laptop rest for a few hours and then switch on again, or should I just leave it running the whole day and shut down once per day? What about the motor, or will the processor get overheated, or the harddisk might run too much and cause its lifespan to shorten?
Notebook computer don't have the same thermal displacement as a desktop computer. If you are just taking a hour break then leaving it on is no problem. If you don't use it for 6 to 8 hours you may what to turn it off or put it into hibernation. Most notebooks have an advance power management that all ready will put the notebook into a low power mode (turns off screen, HD and drops the CPU cycles). This mode is just shy of turning the system off but the power supply is still on. Far as shorting the life span a notebook HD turn on and off all the time so turning the system off will not be a problem for a notebook. The battery will last longer and the Hardware will last longer by turning it off when not used for long period of time. Far as a Desktop computer or a notebook workstations ( a notebook that wasn't designed to be carried around.) they are made to be left on 24/7 without damaging the system.
