Dryer: Filter press vs. Spray dryer?

I am now building up the sample line for powder synthesis by conventional solid-state route. After dispersing/mixing all my starting materials together in water, the following step is to dry the slurry and conduct the calcination step. I am wondering which drying process is better. Especially the pros and cons between filter press and spray dryer. These two dryer will result in different powder packing after drying. One is hard cake (filter press) and the other one is loose powder packing (spray dryer). Could some one have experience about these two dryers? Thanks.

Filter press :
The primary usage of a filter press is as a "fixed volume, batch pressure filter." As a fixed volume filter, it is built to hold a specific quantity of solids. The term "batch" refers to the fact the cycle must be stopped to discharge the collected “filter cake” prior to restarting a cycle. "Pressure" is created by the feed pump in the separation process.

The filter press may also be used as a "polishing" filter to remove minute quantities of solids from an influent stream. In these applications the press is not sized for the quantity of solids holding capacity but for maximum filtration area and hydraulic throughput. When used as a polishing filter, generally a dry filter cake is not developed. Rather, when throughput flow rates drop to an unacceptable level, the cycle is ended.

The last most common usage of the filter press is as a "variable volume" filter through the use of a filter plate known as a diaphragm or membrane plate. This type of plate has a flexible drain-field which when sealed around the edges forms an integral bladder or diaphragm that may be inflated to physically press additional liquid from the filter cake. This process can significantly reduce the typical elapsed time for a press cycle and produce a dryer cake product, or more uniform cake dryness from cycle to cycle.
The Principle:
The pressure behind the slurry (typically 100 psi, but up to 900 psi [7 to 60 bar]) is provided by a feed pump—sometimes a positive displacement or centrifugal pump. With a gravity drain on the filtrate side of the press, a pressure differential between the feed pressure and the gravity discharge is created across the media and the filter cake solids as they build in thickness.

It is the existence of this pressure differential, not just the feed pump pressure, that causes the filtering action to occur. Solids within the slurry will flow to the area of cake development with the lowest pressure differential, resulting in a filter cake that builds uniformly over the drain-field on either side of the chamber walls.

This fill cycle continues until the filter cakes forming on the chamber walls bridge at the center, completely filling the press with solids. It is at this point that the filtration process is complete.
Once this is achieved, the hydraulic closure of the press is retracted, the individual filter elements are separated and the filter cakes are discharged, usually by gravity, to an appropriate receptacle.

WHY USE A SPRAY DRYER FOR YOUR DRYING APPLICATION?
Because of...
THE PARTICLE SIZE CONTROL:
The dry particle size can be easily controlled by atomization of the liquid and the design of the hot gas inlet. The correct spray dryer design and atomization technique can eliminate the need for sizing/classification equipment when the product average particle size is less than 500 microns. "Non-dusting" powders can be made which is beneficial for hazardous products, animal feeds, dyes, and other products.

Because of... THE FLOW PROPERTIES OF DRY SOLIDS
The shape of most spray dried particles is spherical, which provides for fluid-like flow properties. This makes many downstream operations (e.g. packaging, filtering, handling) easier and less costly.

Because of... THE EVAPORATIVE COOLING OF THE PRODUCT
The heat and mass transfer during drying occurs in the air and vapor films surrounding the droplet. This protective envelope of vapor keeps the particle at the saturation temperature. As long as the particle does not become "bone-dry", evaporation is still taking place and the temperature of the solids will not approach the dryer outlet temperature. This is why many heat sensitive products can be spray dried easily at relatively high inlet temperatures.

Because of... THE SHORT RESIDENCE TIME REQUIRED
The surface area produced by atomization of the liquid feed enables a short gas residence time, ranging from 3-40 seconds depending upon the application, which permits spray drying without thermal degradation. This allows for fast turn-around times and product changes because there is no product hold up in the spray drying equipment.

Because of... THE REDUCTION IN CORROSION POTENTIAL
Because a spray dryer is a gas suspended process, the dryer chamber remains dry by design. Therefore, many corrosive materials can be processed with carbon steel as the primary material of construction of the spray dryer chamber, which reduces capital costs.

Because of... THE HOMOGENEOUS SOLIDS MIXTURE PRODUCED
Spray drying produces the most homogeneous product for multi-component solution/slurries. Each particle will be of the same chemical composition as the mixed feed.

Need Expert help 92 ford 150 E4OD trans. problum shifting?

I replaced the solonoid pack inside the pan and the nutral switch and adj to specs. Before, it was droping into 3rd from O.D.gear while going 50-60 . Now the O.D. warning light on the shifter starts blinking and Eng. starts missing like a bad plug wire under load, and the trans shifts iratic and hard. After a while of driving the light stops blinking and the eng. stops missing and the trans. shifts like a new one. Im a pro. mech. but NOT ON AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. I know the clutches are good was no metal in pan when I serviced it or clutch material. Also why dose it shift good and works ok when light stops blinking. I havent checked for codes yet.dont have scaner. would like some professional advice please. Thanks
