Bottom Gusset
How do I make a gusset for a purse?
I'd like to make a purse out of a rectangle of fabric but I want to put a gusset in the bottom to maximize the capacity of the purse. How do I measure out and make an appropriately sized oval to set into the bottom of the purse?
Measure the width of the bag, seam to seam.
Now determine how wide you want the gusset to be.
If the gusset is going to be 5" wide, the length will be 2 1/2" shorter than the width of the bag.
Add seam allowances.
Form the oval.
Stay - stitch the oval and clip to within 3 - 4 thread of the stay stitching.
Align the tip of the oval with the side seam on the bag.
Stitch from one tip to the next.
I don't bother with a separate piece for the bottom. I add extra for the boxed bottom and then use one of these methods -

You can also use needlepoint plastic canvas and cover it with fabric.

Approx. 10.5 inches tall; 12.5 inches across top & bottom; 3 inch gusset; 2.25 inch wide strap with approx. 20 inch drop
I would get at least 2 yards. I always buy way more than I need in case I mess up cutting or something. A regular bolt of fabric is 44 inches x yards on the bolt. I am a quilter, so I'm not quite sure on how to figure out haw many yards you'll need. If I were making it, I'd get 3 yards. Whenever I buy fabric, I buy 3 yards. You can do almost any project with 3 yards of fabric.
