I purchased a set of Debbie Meyers Green Bags a couple of weeks ago and am not sure if they are...?
...worth the money or not.
I put some strawberries in one of the bags but did not refrigerate. I twisted the end of the bag and tucked it under the berries. Two days later they had "full fuzz" on them. I also noticed that the bag was slightly opened. Is this the reason the berries ruined or did I need to refrigerate. Our home stays pretty cool, too cool according to my husband, and I thought they would be okay. I also put couple of oranges in a bag and few days later they were starting to get patched of black on them. I was sure that they were sealed up but did not put them in refrigerator. I don't think this would have happened without bag. Instructions stated not to use bag ties due to damaging bags. Has anyone had any experiences with these bags? I buy lots of fresh fruit and vegetables in summer and thought these would help cut down on waste.
It's a shame you had bad experiences with them but I hope you don't give up and will give them
another shot.
The only thing I don't refrigerate is tomatoes. They keep for about 2 weeks in a
green bag, in a cool room without a lot of light. Other stuff should be refrigerated.
I've had 10 pounds of oranges stashed since late March and they're still fine. Oranges
are a treat for me and I usually have one every few days as a snack.
Don't try keeping bananas in a green bag. For whatever reason, they stay looking
pretty (bright yellow) but the inside turns to mush.
I am able to keep other stuff for a long time in bags, refrigerated. Right now
I have baby carrots, lettuce, broccoli and green beans and they've been in the crisper
drawer for 4-6 weeks and are still fine. Remove vegetables from the plastic bags
and plastic wrappers before storing in a green bag.
I've found that what works well is to put a couple of paper towels in the bag to help
absorb moisture. I change the paper towels every 10 days or so. Also, you don't
need to use anything to close the bag. Just fold over the top. (That means you
shouldn't fill the bag to the brim.)
The bags can be re-used at least 6-8 times. Just wash them out between uses.
I don't recommend products unless I really believe in them and I can honestly say
the green bags have saved me a lot of money. Being able to buy fresh fruits and
vegetables at reasonable sale prices is nice but it's so wasteful if they go bad
before they're used. Keeping them in green bags extends the life so I can use
them up instead of tossing them.

I can't tell from the commercial if they are reusable or not. Anyone have them? Like them?
You ca reuse them 5 or 6 times before they stop being effective. But don't spend the outrageous money they sell for. Evert-Fresh bags are the same thing and cost about half as much.

I love the Debbie Meyer green bags. I find they really do a great job at keeping veggies fresher than regular bags. If you don’t have that, don’t use bags. Letting them air out is better than keeping it bagged up, they need to breathe. Also, some veggies need a little TLC before storing. For instance, carrots will last a very long time if you cut off their leaves, but with the leaves on, they will go limp in less than 12 hours. Otherwise, keep them cool and slightly moist and watch your fridge temp. Too cold will almost freeze them and break down the cell walls and make them mushy.
