The taste of breast milk?
I've never drank breast milk but I have dabbed it on my finger before and it tasted sweet so I left it at that. Well I pumped and froze a bag of it about a month ago and decided last night to give it to the baby- well he won't take a bottle so I put it in a cup and he made a weird face- so I decided to try it. I took a big sip and it tasted sweet at first and then it tasted so disgusting that I couldn't bring myself to swallow it- I had to spit it out. It tasted kind of how dried breastmilk smells. Ok has anyone ever experienced this before? I'm thinking maybe I didn't freeze it the correct way. I did what the box said it- put the milk in squeeze out and air zipper it up both times. I put it in our regular freezer in the ice compartment. Did I do something wrong? Was that freezer burn or how the milk actually tastes?
You have high levels of lipase (enzyme which breaks down fat in milk) in your breast milk. The more lipase, the quicker the milk goes off, even if it's in the freezer. There is nothing you can do to decrease the lipase, but scalding it will help. I had this problem too. My little boy wouldn't drink it unless it was freshly expressed. I tasted it, it was rank! I ended up throwing out loads of milk from the freezer. What a waste. It's fine now that I scald it before freezing.

Is this meat still okay to use?
I bought a pound of ground beef about 10 days ago. I used half of it and froze the other immediately. Is it still okay to use the other half of it? It is still in the container from the store but I also put it a zippered freezer bag. Thanks
Absolutely fine. You can tell with your eyes and your nose. it sounds as if you do things correctly, and frozen ground beef freezes well.
With all ground meat it needs to be cooked thoroughly because it has so many surface areas to attract bacteria. That should be no problem.

Thanks so much for your question. You're right to question plastic and should always be aware of what kind you're using. It terms of what is generally viewed as “safer” plastic, plastic with the recycling numbers of 1, 2, 4, and 5 are generally viewed as being “safer” choices.
According to the customer service representative (that I just double checked with), here are Zip Lock's products along with their recycling numbers:

So, I would stick with the items with the “4″ code when you feel you need to use plastic bags and do your best to wash and reuse them.

So THAT’s why I can’t get canned pumpkin to make my pumpkin muffins I’ve been craving. I also make a pumpkin pasta sauce, that I love. Nice change from Marinara and Alfredo.I have substituted sweet potatoes when making a pumpkin pie, before. No one was the wiser! Any orange winter squash works well. When I had a huge pumpkin that I cooked up in the past; I baked it whole/pieces or steamed it in chunks, then placed the mashed up pumpkin in the crock pot for a while ( a day?) to remove the excess water. Then just froze it in zipper freezer bags. Worked great. No one died. :OD
Don't tell anyone, but I even grab the leftover bones off the plates while I'm clearing the table after a chicken dinner (I never cook boneless skinless chicken). They go into the “chicken bag”, a zipper freezer bag I keep for such purposes. After all, they get cooked again in that slightly acidulated water.
I also have a veg broth bag in the freezer, for odd bits of veg trimmings that are not good enough for the meal, but too good to discard in the compost bucket (washed leek tops, semi-chopped limp carrots & celery, etc.).
And the best broth I have ever made is from the carcasses used for Cooks Illustrated French Chicken in a Pot in a recent issue. That method of cooking seems to really concentrate the flavor. I also add the leftover cooked down pan juices from the chicken. My son declared that soup broth the best ever.
